The artist Juan Manuel Delgado is honored to have his painting The Shoeshiner (2012, oil on canvas) displayed at the entrance of the principal restaurant of the prestigious Union Club of Costa Rica. Created in 2012, the work portrays Mr. Carlos Eduardo, who for more than two decades has carried out his craft just outside the Club, becoming an emblematic and much-admired presence within its history. His dedication, constancy, and warm character have left a lasting impression on all who have had the privilege of encountering him, and are thoughtfully captured in this enduring piece.

The model of the painting is a lottery seller named Mr. Rodrigo Sequeira, who has sold lottery tickets for more than 40 yearrs. Mr. Sequeira lost his brother, who worked in the same vocation. The purpose of this donation was to raise awareness, because respect for life is the greatest of all respects. The unveiling of the painting was done in conjunction with the former President of the Social Protection Board, Mr. Abundio Gutiérrez Matarrita at a press conference. On May 12, 2019, the current President of the Social Protection Board, Mrs. Esmeralda Britton, presented an enlarged and framed copy of a Tenth of the National Lottery draw to the artist. The face of the lottery depicts his painting with the phrase: "Tribute to the Lottery Seller."
